In the bylanes of Indores Nanda Nagar, a 19-year-old wrestler named Rajdeep Chauhan is proving that you do not need fancy gyms or protein powders to build a champion. All you need is mud, commitment, and the will to wake up before sunrise.
Rajdeep trains in a traditional akhara, where there are no dumbbells or machines. Instead, he lifts bricks tied to ropes, runs with tractor tires, and does 1,000 pushups a day on the mitti floor. His coach, a retired national wrestler, swears by these desi techniques passed down through generations.
Despite never entering a modern gym, Rajdeep has won gold in two consecutive state wrestling championships and even qualified for the under-21 national trials this year.
So what is the secret
Traditional akhara training focuses on functional strength, stamina, and discipline. Wrestlers eat a nutrient-rich desi diet of soaked almonds, milk, ghee, and jaggery. They train barefoot to build natural balance and power, and they avoid machines that isolate muscle groups.
Rajdeep credits his success to this training style and says, “When you wrestle on mitti, every fall teaches you something. You learn to rise quickly — not just in sport, but in life.”
His story is now being used by sports teachers in Indore to show how low-tech training can produce high-level results. Even coaches from private schools are visiting the akhara to learn more about these traditional methods.
With wrestling gaining popularity again through leagues and Olympic interest, more youngsters are enrolling in akharas across MP. And Indore is emerging as a new hotspot for traditional wrestling revival.
What Rajdeep shows is simple You do not need the best equipment to become the best — just the right attitude, roots in tradition, and a relentless drive to improve.
It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted.
