Mumbai, long known as India’s financial and cultural capital, has now earned a new global title: Cruise Capital of India.
On June 15, 2024, the Government of India unveiled the much-awaited Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) at Ballard Pier — a modern marvel that marks India’s biggest step yet into global marine tourism.
Spanning over 4.15 lakh square feet and built at a cost of ₹556 crore, the terminal can handle 1 million passengers per year and berth five cruise ships simultaneously, including the largest cruise liners in the world.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, who inaugurated the terminal, called it a “gateway of India for the world’s oceans.”
The terminal features customs and immigration lounges, retail outlets, art displays, and a design inspired by Nautilus shells and Indian oceanic heritage. It’s capable of processing 500 passengers per hour, setting a new benchmark in port-city interface.
MICT aims to transform Mumbai into an international cruise tourism hub—connecting routes from Dubai, Singapore, Seychelles, and Europe with Indian ports like Goa, Kochi, and Lakshadweep.
According to government projections, MICT could generate ₹35,000 crore in revenue and create over 2.5 lakh direct and indirect jobs in hospitality, logistics, and retail over the next decade.
The cruise terminal is expected to host 250 cruise calls annually by 2030, up from just 128 in 2023.
MICT has been developed with green building features, solar panels, e-berthing systems, and plastic-free operations. A smart surveillance system will integrate with maritime security and local policing to ensure safety for global visitors.
Boosts India’s Cruise Tourism: India enters a club dominated by Miami, Dubai, and Singapore.
Makes Mumbai a Global Tourism Hub: No longer just a financial capital, but a marine transit city.
Improves Infrastructure Readiness for International Events: Makes Mumbai more eligible to host world-level MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) events.
Mumbai isn’t just ready for the world — the world is now cruising toward Mumbai.
It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted.
